Pastor’s Column – March 2011

During an Oasis Moment on a Wednesday evening, I used a slide that showed some of the ways Walnut Hills is engaged in mission – in our community and world. It is not intended to be an exhaustive list – but it is descriptive of the many and diverse ways God is opening doors of opportunity and ministry for us. The slide looked something like this:

As we pray and dream about the future of Walnut Hills – I have a strong sense that more doors will begin to open for us as we continue to grow in our understanding of what God desires of us. There will be an abundance of ways and opportunities for each one of us to use our talents and gifts meaningfully as followers of Christ. Can you imagine the impact if every person at Walnut Hills was involved directly in mission through the ministries of our church and as volunteers in caring organizations throughout our community? Williamsburg would change dramatically for the better.

Our guest for WMU Focus Sunday, Anna Kissne, used a wonderful verse of Scripture, Ephesians 2:10 as a part of her text. In The Message translation, it reads: No, we neither make nor save ourselves. God does both the making and saving. He creates each of us by Christ Jesus to join him in the work he does, the good work he has got-ten ready for us to do, work we had better be doing.

God is our Maker – God is our Savior – God expects each of us to be involved in His good work. Find places to share God’s great love.

If you need help, use the season of Lent (Ash Wednesday, March 9 to Easter Sunday, April 24) to explore and seek God’s direction for your life. Lent is a time to recall the priority of God in our lives: that we come from God and go to God, and that God is the companion of our lives. The focus of living faith and religious practice is not on us but on God’s place in our lives (Sacred Space: the prayer book of 2011, p 104).

On a personal note, Danner continues to make improvement in her recovery from a total knee replacement. Your loving and caring spirit and actions have blessed our lives immensely. Thank you for your love and support
